Let’s Talk Bookish – Can Books Be Effective Horror?

Hi everyone, I hope you are all doing well! As it is once again Friday, it is time for another Let’s Talk Bookish edition. Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books and Dani @ Literary Lion. This weeks topic is about whether books can be effective horror.

I have to admit that horror is probably one of the only bookish genres that I avoid because I hate horror. There is just something about it that creeps me out and leaves me frightened. I am the same with TV shows and Movies, I will literally leave the room if there is even a chance one will come on.

When it comes to reading do you think books can be scary? Are you less scared because there are no pictures?

I definitely think that books can be scary, but that may be because I am a little bit of a wimp. I believe that so long as it is effectively told and the author builds up enough atmosphere, the book will be scary because of how it is told. I get easily scared if there is an atmosphere and tension has been gathered, which is an essential part of scary/horror books. I may be slightly less scared if there are no pictures, as I will be able to skim read over the parts that I really don’t want to read, but with a picture, you are faced with it. But if the author’s writing style works for a horror setting, they should also create a picture in my mind.

Do you feel other mediums such as film are more effective for horror?

I think that it all depends on how the story is told and the quality of it. If you have a film that has terrible special effects and you don’t believe in the story, it will not be effective for you. It all depends on what makes you scared and what you find to be effective. The same goes for a book, so I think that each is individual and depends on your personal preference. I will say that I tend to find films and tv shows scarier because I absolutely hate with a passion jump scares, and it is hard to do them effectively in a book.

Have you ever been kept up at night by a book?

I have to say that I don’t really read books that are going to keep me up all night because I am scared. I tend to avoid them at all costs. But there has probably been at one time or another a book that has kept me up terrified.

There you have it, my thoughts are to whether books can be effective horror! What do you think about it? Let me know in the comments below!
