Mid Year Freak Out Tag 2021

Hey everyone I hope you are doing well! I thought for today I would do the Mid Year Freak Out Tag, I missed out on doing the tag last year because I hadn’t created my blog yet. I have had a good reading year so far, and am on track with my goals, so I have quite a few books to talk about! I have tried to pick a different book for all of the prompts so I can attempt to talk about as many books as possible!

Without further ado, here are my answers to the Mid Year Freak Out Tag!

1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2020

Going on my CAWPILE rating’s for the year I have two best books of the year The Song Rising and The Mask Falling by Samantha Shannon (9.86/10)! If I had to pick a favourite out of the two of them I would have to pick The Mask Falling. I adored The Mask Falling and the dramatic ending made all the difference. We also got much more of an exploration around Paige’s sexuality which I particularly enjoyed as it is one of few times that I have seen demisexuality represented on the page. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book in the series, even though I know it will probably break my heart.

2. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2020

I could put The Mask Falling in here again, but I am going to change it up and go with Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo! I love this book and the characters within it, they are some of my favourites of all time. The development of the characters between books 1 and 2 was brilliant and I loved the maturity in the storyline in Crooked Kingdom. I would love to have another book in this series, even if it is just following the characters around their daily lives.

3. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to

I can’t believe that I am having to put this book on this list but it is A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas! I had all these grand plans to have read this book in release week but it never happened. Sadly life got in the way and I couldn’t dedicate my time to the massive brick of a book. I am hoping that I can spend my summer finally picking it up.

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year

The most anticipated release that I am looking forward to in the second half of the year is Our Violent Ends by Chloe Gong. I absolutely adored These Violent Delights and cannot recommend it highly enough, so I am definitely looking forward to seeing how the story is going to finish. It is the epitome of an enemies-to-lovers romance which is one of my favourite tropes so it was no surprise that I love it as much as I do.

5. Biggest disappointment

The biggest book disappointment of my year so far has to be The Road Trip by Beth O’Leary! I was so excited for this release as I have loved both of her previous books, but sadly The Road Trip missed the mark for me. I didn’t connect with any of the characters, and found them all to be extremely annoying which ruined my reading experience. Fingers crossed this was just a small blip and I go back to loving Beth O’Leary’s books.

6. Biggest surprise

The biggest book surprise that I have had this year is Shards of Earth by Adrian Tchaikovsky! This isn’t to say that I thought I would hate it, Shards of Earth was just my first Space Opera in a while, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. It was also the first Adrian Tchaikovsky book that I have read. I highly suggest picking it up if you like Space Opera’s.

7. Favourite new author. (Debut or new to you)

A new favourite author that I have discovered in the first half on 2021 is Jennifer L. Armentrout! I know that loads of other people had already discovered her work before this year, but the From Blood and Ash series is the first of hers that I have discovered. I can’t wait to dive into more of her backlist and find some new favourites.

8. Newest fictional crush

I have not had any real new fictional crushes so far this year. But the newest fictional crush that I have had so far this year is probably Wrath from Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco. I loved his relationship with Emilia and the way that he interacted with her. I can’t wait to see more from him in the sequel later this year.

9. Newest favourite character

I have two new favourite characters from the first half of the year, and they are Kiva from The Prison Healer by Lynette Noni and Jesper from Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. I love both of them for different reasons. I love Kiva due to the strength that she shows and the growth that she goes through to get to where she is at the end. I love Jesper because of his humour and the way that he interacts with all of the other characters in the series.

10. Book that made you cry

55600878. sy475

The only book that has made cry so far this year is Instructions for Dancing by Nicola Yoon, and it made up for all the other books because it left me sobbing! This book was so heartbreaking but it was also so heartwarming! I highly suggest picking it up even if YA contemporary isn’t normally for you because I am sure 99.9% of people will adore it!

11. Book that made you happy

There have been many books so far this year that have made me happy, but one that stands out is Take a Hint, Dani Brown! I loved the banter between Dani and Zaf and I think that they just work perfectly with each other. It had me laughing out loud constantly and that is a sure way to make me happy. I also have to give an honourable mention to Act Your Age, Eve Brown the third book in the trilogy.

12. Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received)

48806694. sy475

The most beautiful books that I have brought this year are all my Fairyloot special editions, they are really pulling it out this year! But the most beautiful book cover outside of special editions that I have brought this year has to be Ariadne by Jennifer Saint. I just love all of the gold and the contrast with the dark blue.

13. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

There are hundreds of books that I need to read before the end of the year because there are so many new releases and books on my TBR that I have owned for years that I am extremely excited for. If I had to pick one standout book it would have to be One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston. Red, White and Royal Blue was one of my favourite reads of last year and I have heard so many incredible things about it that I am desperate to get to it.

  1. The Road Trip has become one of my favourite books! It sucks that it was disappointing for you! I’m currently reading Get a Life, Chloe Brown and it’s good to hear that the sequel made you happy
