Let’s Talk Bookish – Books Based On Games/Shows/Movies/Comics

Hi everyone, I hope you are all doing well! As it is once again Friday, it is time for another Let’s Talk Bookish edition. Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books and Dani @ Literary Lion. This weeks topic is all about books that are based off of something else!

I don’t think that many of the books that I have read have been inspired by games/shows/movies/comics, they are mainly inspired by mythology and fairy tales. That being said there are a few that are. I am more used to reading books that then get adapted into something else.

“The book is better” is a common outcry amongst book worms, because the book came first…but what about when it didn’t? How do you feel about book adaptations of movies? Books based on video game worlds? Books that tell alternate stories from television worlds? Or even books featuring your favorite superheroes?

I am generally happy with anything that gets made into books. But I think it would depend on what is being told and how it is being told. It also depends on the author and whether you like their way of telling a story, which is much the same with a director or a programmer. I am not a massive video game player, so I probably wouldn’t even notice if an author had adapted a game into a book unless it was really obvious. If a movie or a tv programme was adapted, I would much rather that they adapted a small part of the story or made an alternate storyline for the book to cover, inspired by the original plot. I have read a couple of books where they have been inspired by Broadway/West End musicals which I enjoyed, but I felt as if something was missing without the music. Superheros are not really something that I am invested in, but I have read a couple of books that Black Widow inspired. I think with superheros, there is so much material that can be adapted that, in some ways you are always going get an original story.

Do you have any favourites in these genres? Is the book still better?

I don’t really have any favourites in these specific genres because I haven’t seen many of these types of books around myself. I have not been impressed with those that I have read as they have not been as good as the source material. The most recent book that I have read was Dear Evan Hansen by Val Emmich, which tells the same story as the popular musical. I don’t think it was as good as the musical because I wasn’t connected to the characters. In fact, it actually ended up on the books that I would throw in the ocean list.

If you have any suggestions for adaptations that I might like, please drop them in the comments below!
