Hey guys, it’s Tuesday again so it means it’s time for Top Ten Tuesday. Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme that is hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is books that I’d gladly throw in the ocean.
This was a topic that I enjoyed coming up with the books for, and I found it quite therapeutic. I can also promise that no books were harmed in the making of this list!
Murder Most Unladylike by Robin Stevens

I read Murder Most Unladylike as part of Middle Grade Monthly in 2020, and I really didn’t enjoy it. I had so many issues with the way that certain characters were treated and the bullying that was never addressed by adults. The series may get better in later books but I will not be checking them out.
Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

I thought that I would love this book but I just didn’t. Heading into it I had heard nothing but good things, sadly it didn’t live up to the hype for me. I didn’t feel any connection to any of the characters and found all of their choices to be a little bit strange.
This Mortal Coil by Emily Suvada

This Mortal Coil was another book that I thought I would love for its Science Fiction elements but I just didn’t end up enjoying it. I found the plot to be a little bit boring and guessed the main plot point pretty early on. I was just very disappointed by it.
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

I know. this is a book that most people have enjoyed but I really didn’t. I found the plot to be really boring and didn’t like any of the characters. I also couldn’t get past the fact that Carden has a tail.
Dear Evan Hansen by Val Emmich

Dear Evan Hansen is one of my favourite musicals and I thought that I would love the book. Sadly I was disappointed with the storyline and I found that it didn’t really translate well onto the page. There were quite a few added moments that I didn’t feel were really necessary which kept taking me out of the story.
PS I Still Love You by Jenny Han

While I enjoyed the first book in the To All The Boys I’ve Loved series I hated the second one so much so that I DNFed it. It felt as if all of the characters had regressed backwards and had forgotten everything that they learnt in the first book. It also had the trope that I hate the most, miscommunication so it can gladly go in the ocean.
Supernova by Melissa Meyer

I loved this series but was really disappointed by the final book. I wanted so much more from the ending and it all felt a bit boring. I would gladly throw this book in the ocean if it would get me a re-write.
Where She Went by Gayle Foreman

I enjoyed reading If I Stay but I really didn’t see the point of this book. I liked the ambiguous ending of If I Stay and felt that it should have been left the way it was. It was also told from Adam’s POV which I didn’t like.
Still Me by Jojo Moyes

I absolutely adored Me Before You and it is a story that will always stay with me. But I didn’t see the need for the two sequels that have been released since. I think the story has lost what it used to be about, so I would happily throw the sequels in the ocean.
The Second Shatter Me Trilogy by Taheriah Mafi

I loved the first Shatter Me trilogy, but didn’t see the need for the second trilogy. It undid quite a bit of work that was done in the first half and felt as if we were just reliving the story again. I would gladly throw the second set in the ocean.
There you have it, some of the books that I would gladly throw in the ocean!
Good for you for knowing your limits!

Ugh I hated the 2 books after Me Before You. There was literally no need and it completely ruined it for me. Although I am surprised to see The Cruel Prince! I read it recently and I really liked it. You’re right tho, Cardan having a tail was definitely something different 😆 Oh and Ps I Still Love You was also really bad! I didn’t like the first one much either, but the second was another level 😑

Me Before You is one of my favourite books but it definitely should have stayed as a standalone! I just wasn’t expecting the tail to appear 😆

I didn’t like The Cruel Prince either. Granted, I own all three books and plan on finishing the series but yeah….I didn’t really enjoy the first one lol BUT YES the tail hahaha I had forgotten all about that!

I did consider carrying on with the series but I knew I would just be putting myself through something that I would hate, so I ended up not doing it!

Strange to see A Gentleman’s guide to vice and virtue on a hate list. I thought everyone just loved it! I haven’t read it, so I can’t really comment! Haven’t read any of the books on your list. But I’ll try to avoid them!

Have to agree with Where She Went, and the awful photoshopping of her hair on the cover drives me crazy.

I had forgotten how bad the cover was until I was making this post 😆

I definitely agree with you on Where She Went! If I Stay should’ve stayed a stand-alone.

I think it would have been such a beautiful story had it been left with an ambiguous ending

Funny that it bothered you that Carden had a tail in The Cruel Prince. I could never get past the fact that Edward in Twilight was so old!

I think it was because it took me a long time to realise that they were talking about an actual tail, and when I did I just couldn’t stop laughing!

I’ve heard really good things about This Mortal Coil but I’ve been put off reading it since the pandemic, I don’t really want to read anything with virus storylines for a while!

I’m the same at the moment, pandemic books are off my TBR!

I imagine quite a lot of people feel the same! Maybe in a few years time when this whole thing isn’t quite as immediate, but not now!

So many people are saying about Jojo Moyes’ books! I think maybe I should take it off my tbr list

I adored Me Before You but I would suggest stopping there! I haven’t read any of her other series but I am considering them!

I am glad someone agrees, I had such high expectations and was let down so much!

Great list – I found the Murder Most Unladylike series less than gripping, but then I am significantly outside the target audience range!
These are the books I chose that belong in the sea, only because they feature the sea prominently!

I’ve only read P.S. I Still Love You and Where She Went, and while I didn’t enjoy them as much as their predecessors, I DID actually like the final Lara Jean the best out of all three. 🙂
