Let’s Talk Bookish – Predicting Trends

Hi everyone, I hope you are all doing well! As it is once again Friday, it is time for another Let’s Talk Bookish edition. Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books and Dani @ Literary Lion. This weeks topic is all about predicting trends.

I tend to like trends within the books that I read, as it means that when I am in the mood for something specific, be that a trope or a particular character type, I can always find something to read. But after a while, I can get a little bit bored and want something new to become popular.

Have you noticed any trends in the genre/categories you read in the past few years?

I have noticed that there has been a shift towards the enemies-to-lovers romance, which is a trend that I will always be on board with. I also have the fantasy romance genre become much more popular and mainstream, which I am loving because there are so many excellent books out there waiting to be discovered. There has also been a real trend towards fae and witchy books within the fantasy genre, which has only started recently, but I think it will stay for a while. There has also been movement away from the dystopian genre as it used to be when I was a little bit younger. When I was younger, books like The Hunger Games and Divergent were published, but there are not many newly published books like them at the moment.

What do you think the next trend will be?

I am no good at predicting anything, so I have absolutely no clue what the next trends could be. Bt if I had to give it my best guess, I think that vampires are going to come back in fashion. There are a couple of new releases for 2021 and 2022 that feature vampires, so I think they are going to make a resurgence.

What trends would you like to see?

There are not many trends that I would like to see as I am quite happy with all the trends that we have at the moment. Quite a few of the things that I would like to see within books are more permanent features that don’t disappear after a while. If I had to pick a trend that I would want to see, it would have to be more mixed-media formatted books. I love them within the science fiction genre, and I would love to see them in fantasy.

Are trends healthy for the book world?

I think that trends are healthy for the book industry, but they do come with some downsides. The market can sometimes become saturated with the same type of book. It can also be hard for an author if their release comes at the end of the trend rather than the beginning, as some readers may have moved onto the next trend. As a reader, trends are brilliant as even if you are not reading the trend at the time of release, the books will always be there whenever we want to read them.

There you have it, my opinions on trends and what I think the next ones could be! Do you like book trends? What are some trends you would like to see? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. Agreed. I think I am always gonna gravitate towards the enemies to lovers trope ….no matter what the trend is. And yeah… trends do have their downsides. And yes! Fantasy romance has suddenly become soo popular that I need to get to it….I feel left out. Haha
