Why I love book clubs

I thought for today’s post; I would talk about why I love taking part in book clubs.

I currently take part in two book clubs, which vary in both audience and genre. My two book clubs are MythTake Reads and Middle Grade Monthly. MythTake Reads is a bi-monthly book club that focuses on myth, folklore and fairytale retellings. Middle Grade Monthly is a monthly book club that is all about middle grade. I will link both their twitters with all the information if you are interested in either of them.

What I love about book clubs

Wide variety of books

One thing that I love about taking part in book clubs is that while they may have a theme, the books will not be the same each month. I am someone who will mostly stick to her favourite genres and not stray out of them. So I find it useful to take part in them to widen my reading. This is especially true of middle grade monthly, as it is focused on an audience rather than a genre, meaning there is a much wider variety.

Someone to talk to about reading

I am the only person in my family and friendship group who takes an active interest in reading, so I don’t have anyone to discuss my reads with. But I have been able to find a reading community through book clubs. It means that I can discuss what we are reading through Twitter, Discord or even youtube live shows, which is especially crucial with the current state of the world.

Varying opinions

Another thing that I love about book clubs are hearing other people opinions and reading their reviews. Everyone has different views about books, and we all interpret them differently, so it is nice to be able to hear what others think as they may pick up on things that I missed and vice versa.

What I sometimes don’t love book clubs

Wide variety of books

I know that I just mentioned that having a wide variety of books to read was a good thing, but sometimes it can be a bit of a problem. As I mentioned, I am set in the genres that I read, and that has come from reading experience. So when I branch out, I don’t tend to enjoy it. My only two star read this year has come from Middle Grade Monthly, when we read a detective inspired book. So while I do like having variety, it can sometimes be a bit of a problem.

Having to make sure you read the book

As you may have noticed, I tend to have a set TBR for the month and generally stick to it. But occasionally I am not able to finish all the books on my TBR or may get distracted by a new release. The problem with book clubs is that you have to finish the chosen book within the month. Otherwise, you are behind and will miss out on all the conversation surrounding the book, which is one of the reasons I take part in book clubs.

There you have it, some of the reasons as to why I love taking part in book clubs.

Do you take part in any book clubs? What do you think of them?
